Portable cable fault location EZ-Thump 12 kV

Adiradh offers the Megger EZ-Thump 12 kV v3 cable fault location system for fast and practical fault finding on underground medium-voltage (MV) power cables. The compact system combines several cable testing and fault location functions in one portable unit. Moreover, its small size allows users to transport it in an average-sized car, which makes it useful for field service work. The EZ-Thump 12 kV can help first responders locate cable faults, while its advanced functions also support more demanding fault location tasks. In addition, the system provides a single-stage capacitor surge discharge of 500 J at 12 kV. It also includes a built-in time-domain reflectometer (TDR) for fault prelocation. Therefore, users can prelocate low-resistance faults with TDR and high-resistance faults with the Arc Reflection Method (ARM). Furthermore, technicians can use an acoustic/electromagnetic receiver for precise fault pinpointing.

Overview

The Megger EZ-Thump 12 kV v3 combines cable testing, fault prelocation, fault pinpointing, and sheath fault location in one compact system. Its 500 J at 12 kV single-stage capacitor surge discharge system provides the surge energy required for cable fault location work. In addition, the built-in TDR helps users prelocate low-resistance faults. For high-resistance faults, the Arc Reflection Method (ARM) works with the fault location system to help determine the fault distance. After prelocation, technicians can use an acoustic/electromagnetic receiver, such as the Megger DigiPhone 2, to pinpoint the fault position. The system also supports sheath testing and sheath fault location. Moreover, the EZ-Thump 12 kV offers automatic and expert operating modes. Automatic mode requires minimal setup, while expert mode gives experienced users more control for difficult applications. As a result, the system supports both routine and challenging underground MV cable fault work.

About Product

The Megger EZ-Thump 12 kV v3 focuses on simple operation and easy transport without removing key fault location functions. Users control the system through a single rotary knob, while a bright colour display shows test results clearly, including in bright sunlight. Furthermore, automatic mode simplifies the testing process because users only need to connect the test set to the cable and switch it on. The system can then detect and display the cable end and fault location automatically. For more complex cable faults, experienced technicians can select expert mode and adjust the operation to suit the application. In addition, the compact and lightweight design allows technicians to carry the EZ-Thump 12 kV to locations where access may be difficult. The system can operate from an AC mains supply or its internal rechargeable battery. Therefore, technicians can use it in locations where mains power is not available.

Technology & Benefits

The EZ-Thump 12 kV uses several fault location methods to help technicians find underground cable faults. First, the integrated TDR helps prelocate low-resistance faults. For high-resistance faults, the system uses the Arc Reflection Method (ARM) to help identify the fault distance. Next, technicians can use an acoustic/electromagnetic receiver to pinpoint the fault position on the cable route. In addition, the system supports sheath testing and sheath fault location. The EZ-Thump 12 kV also includes safety functions that help control the test process. For example, the F-OHM system checks the earth/ground connection before testing. If the system detects an incorrect connection, it inhibits the test. Moreover, an emergency stop function and key-switch safety interlock add further safety controls. Automatic mode makes routine testing simple, while expert mode gives experienced users additional control for challenging applications. Finally, AC and internal battery power allow flexible use in different field locations.
